Volunteers at a local Macmillan Cancer Unit received national long service awards from a local Rose Queen.
Rachel Astbury, age 13 and a student at Malbank High School, presented Irene Doyle and Peg Tomkinson with a Bronze Five-Year Service Award for their time spent at the Leighton Hospital-based Macmillan Cancer Unit.
Rachel, whose Mum received care for breast cancer from the Unit, has pledged to spend her year as Rose Queen raising money for Macmillan Cancer Support as a way of repaying all the support her Mum received during her illness.
The ceremony took place as part of Macmillan’s Volunteer week, a chance to say a big thank you to all volunteers.
Julie Pieczarka, Macmillan Cancer Information and Support Manager at the Unit, said: “Irene and Peg have given up their time on a weekly basis to support the Unit and I’m delighted they have received this award. Thanks also to all my lovely volunteers, including Ruth Bridges who has been awarded a 10-year service award but was unable to attend today.”
The Macmillan Cancer Unit is currently looking for additional volunteers to help support a planned library outreach. To find out more about please contact Julie on 01270 273603 or email email@example.com.
